project 2a : retreat house @ kuala selangor nature park
In this project we were required to further develop our project 2a into a retreat on our own. The character was to remain the same. The retreat was to act as a getaway where the director would reside for a short period of time. Therefore it must be functional and have habitable spaces to enable the activity associated with living, dining, bedroom and so forth. The retreat should also be contextual to make it unique to its landscape and activity.
The form of the retreat house was inspired by the concept of flower petals, in which layers of spaces were combined to form a whole circular space. The walkway towards the retreat is purposely curved to give a continuous gentle flow of movement as experienced in the building. The entrance has a turning point which expressed the unpredictable outcomes that the director gives in the movies. Moreover, the retreat is standing solely on one structural support pillar as derived from the director's self-reliance and personality of pushing to the limit. This gives the building a floating effect. The retreat is split into two floors to separate the public and private spaces. The retreat is also contextual as it uses wooden strip walls entensively to allow ventilation and also allow nature into the building, hence blurring the interior and the exterior. The retreat is placed further away from the existing pavement to enhance privacy and is surrounded moselt by positive views.
Through this project, I was able to design a simple building type that meets the user requirements and respect the site context, balancing both internal and external.
