architectural design studio 2

project 2a : pavilion @ kuala selangor nature park

In this project, we were split into groups of 2 and were required to design a pavilion based on the concepts we’ve derived from the site visit to Kuala Selangor Nature Park. The pavilion should also be designed specifically for the character that we were assigned to and is contextual. The character given to my group is a film director and the site given was the mangrove swamp in the nature park. Upon completing our site analysis, we then designed the pavilion for our director with the purpose of relaxation and took in account of the surrounding context.

The most striking part of our design is the raw organic form of the pavilion supported by only one pillar. This is developed from the characteristics of our director who is self-reliant. As a director, his movies carry very malleable themes which he can control such as time and dimensions of mind. Although the form is organic, we decided to introduce linearity by tapering in as inspired by our concept model as a synthesis of the director’s clarity of idea which he develops layer by layer. Rising from the ground with only one support structure, it defines the director as daring and having a radical personality of pushing to the limit.

The meditative space and working space are connected to allow flexibility and circulation. The meditative space is raised a couple of steps higher to show the importance of that space. The central pillar has contours that are ergonomic for the director to lie on comfortably. As he would need to see the overall picture of his idea, we decided to incorporate a working wall for him to map out his ideas.

Through this project, I was able to generate form and space through architectural conceptualisation, with the emphasis on exploring the user requirement and simple spatial organization skills and site responding to develop an architectural proposition. I also understood the importance of using the art of crafting and making; drawings and model as a critical design tool as part of the design process.
