building construction 2

project 2 : understanding forces in solid structure and surface structure

building chosen : oslo opera house

In this project, we were required to propose 3 buildings that has at least 2 combinations of solid, surface or skeletal construction, and then conduct a research and identify the different types of structural systems used in the construction of the assigned building. In the same group of 5, we proposed the KLIA building, Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum and the Oslo Opera House. In the end we decided to go with the Oslo Opera House. We were then required to produce a model showing the structural systems used and an A4 sized booklet explaining a brief introduction of the building, its detailings, structural systems and the modelling process documentation. Lastly, we were to do an individual work which was to produce a detailed drawing on a certain part of the building, in this case I chose the perforated aluminium cladding wall located at the roof of oslo opera house.

Through this project, we had acquired the discipline specific knowledge capability, which is identifying the functional requirements of surface structure, for example the frameless glass wall construction used in the oslo opera house. We were also able to think critically and creatively, as the design of the physical model was entirely up to us, as long as its showed the systems within the building, therefore after discussing within the group, we decided to do a sectional model of it. Lastly, we've required the lifelong learning capability as each of us did our part in finishing the analysis booklet..
