architectural design studio 5

Architecture Design Studio 5 focuses on the theme of place-making for the urban street. It aims to explore and provide appropriate architectural solutions in designing a community library for the city’s inhabitants. Students will begin by conducting preliminary studies in that introduces them to the studies and context of urbanity through the analysis and documentation of the current urban condition of a selected inner-city site. This will be done in concurrence with the research of urban infill and community library precedents, and their architectural responses. By the end of the module, students will have developed an appropriate scheme for an urban contemporary community library within a dense inner-city street environment that takes into consideration an understanding of applicable current legislations, building technologies and cultural imperatives of the site and its surroundings.

BRICKFIELDS COMMUNITY LIBRARY

Brickfields is a small heritage town and residential neighbourhood located just outside central Kuala Lumpur.  Due to the construction of KL Sentral and the Transportation system, it is rapidly evolving to a more commercial extension. However, the vast development brought lackness in open spaces for public realms and demolishment of heritage buildingss. Therefore, a new community library is proposed to focus on community interaction through a variety of cultural, learning and recreational opportunities. It aims to be an inspiring building that would be a focal point for the community, generating a feeling of ownership on the part of its users.

The main concept of my community library is Interlace. The idea was derived from the multi layered and diversed community of Brickfields being continously connected with each other.  The idea is translated into the design by creating layers of floors with visual linkage throughout the main spaces in the library.  The design is then further developed by responding to views and  circulation of site as well as solving site issue such as lack of greenery and sense of security. The library is then designed with raw materials such as bricks and concrete to give the sense and historicity of the place.
