architectural design studio 1

project 1 : self-expression through object

In the first project, we were required to represent ourselves through an art medium. I did a A3 portrait.

"The Flower" represents my shy self who transformed into a confident person after facing obstacles as I grew older.

Through this project, I was able to abstract and redefined ideas of myself and learn to construct a piece of art that best represents me.

project 2 : self-expression through architectural space

Before starting project 2, we had an exercise that further developed our self-expression into a space.

In the second project, we were required to express ourselves spatially by creating a 1:1 installation in a group of 3. We ended up choosing  one of my groupmates, Nicholas' personalities and transformed it into a progressive space.

Through this project, I was able to distinguish the role of scale and proportion in the relationship between the human body and a designed space. It also allowed me to design and produce a space that embodies and expresses a conceptual narrative.

project 3 : space for the self

In the third project, we were required to design a hideout space by engaging it to the walls in an alley of an imaginary "city".

For Task 1, we designed and created a site model which consists of two buildings with an alley in between based on inspirations from the movie "Blade Runner" in a group of 5.

For Task 2 & 3, we had to choose or create a character based on the movie and create a narrative. I've chosen Pris Stratton, a prostitute replicant who was saved by her friend Roy and had come to earth to help Roy in return. But since replicants are banned from earth and will be killed on sight, a hideout space is needed to protect her. The design was based on her characteristics.

Through this project, I learned how to create and develop a conceptual narrative, how human anthropometry and ergonomics relate to and inform space and am aware of the scale and proportion of the human body.
